December News

Happy New Year from us all at MAN Commercial; we hope you had an enjoyable Christmas even under this year’s difficult circumstances.

For obvious reasons we were not able to celebrate with our usual Christmas parties and events, so we had to get creative to show our appreciation to our colleagues who have worked so hard throughout 2020. A socially-distanced Christmas lunch of pizza and treats was organised for our Head Office team, with the usual Christmas party alcohol and dancing replaced with quizzes and games.

For our officers out in the field we created a special prize draw, with 30 lucky winners being drawn to receive gift vouchers as a Christmas surprise.

Throughout the year, our CEO Iain McCallister has been collecting donations all year from anyone who challenges him to a game of pool – there have been a few! The total raised reached £600! Those of you who have been following us for a while will know that MAN Commercial Protection have been proud sponsors of Hall Green Boxing Club for many, many years, and the money raised will go towards the club’s running costs during lockdown.

2020 was the first New Year’s Eve for many, many years that we did not have Events Teams busy out and about across the country, including at the London Southbank annual fireworks display which unfortunately had to take place without crowds this year. Nevertheless the run up to 2021 has been extremely busy, with our usual events being replaced by mobilisation for new manned guarding contracts due to start the first week in January, including a food distribution location in Fakenham, a new site for an existing client in the transport division and more support for our existing distribution sector customers who are regularly opening new premises due to ever increasing demand.

As has been the case for much of the year, we were also tasked with providing extra support and hours to various existing clients who are part of the NHS Supply Chain, whose workload has increased due to demand for PPE and other critical supplies.

In December we also began working on 8 new NHS Covid-19 testing centre locations across the Midlands – we are proud to be part of this essential project.

Key holding packs

December also saw a large number of new key holding contracts go live from our Head Office, serving customers throughout the Midlands and beyond. Winter is always a busy time for keyholding and alarm response and this has only been amplified due to the lockdown situation. With so many premises unmanned or vacant at the moment, alarm monitoring and site checks can be crucial to preventing crime and vandalism. Similarly, the demand for vehicle escort services have increased, with many high value assignments undertaken throughout the month.

We look to the new year with high hopes for 2021; we were lucky enough to continue our substantial growth as a Company in 2020 and are excited to see what the new year brings for MAN Commercial Protection Ltd.

November News

Here we are nearing the end of 2020, and what a year it’s been! Possibly our most challenging yet in many ways, but also a year with many positives as we have continued to thrive and rapidly grow as a business.

November kicked off with an exciting new concierge security contract which went live in Chelmsford, Essex at the start of the month. We have also been supporting our valued existing clients at new site locations opening in Birmingham, Ipswich and Cambridgeshire, which have commenced during November. Our customers know they can always call on MAN Commercial to deliver the ideal manned guarding solutions, be it at short notice, adhoc, temporary or permanent.

Meticulous mobilisation plans have also been underway for a large pharmaceutical contract, starting across nationwide locations in December.

With plans for increased public space CCTV monitoring from our Head Office Control Room from December, we have invested in further training for our entire team of Controllers. We are also expanding the team, with an Operational Assistant joining us soon to work on scheduling, rostering and supporting employee welfare. Our Control Room is the hub of the Company, and is fully compliant with BS standards and SIA ACS regulations.

November 25th was the 2020 Security Fire and Excellence Awards, which took place virtually this year due to Coronavirus restrictions. MAN Commercial’s HR Team were over the moon to have been shortlisted in the Summer for the prestigious Inspiration in HR Award. This Award seeks to recognise the work of Human Resources professionals, and this year more than ever has shown the strength of our HR Team who have displayed great innovation and willingness to adapt current processes quickly to ensure support continues to be provided to the whole business in the face of the pandemic.

A socially- distanced pizza and prosecco party was organised so the team could gather to watch the Awards together, along with a few more supporters from the office! Unfortunately, MAN Commercial were not winners this year but feel very proud and honoured to be one of only 7 finalists.

The pandemic this year has meant that a lot of face-to-face training has had to temporarily cease, but we have made full use of Zoom and other online platforms to adapt our usual approach. In November, Directors from the HR department led management training in recruitment and site level HR processes, which was conducted over Zoom. We roll out this training twice a year to induct new starters and to update and refresh existing management and supervisory team members on best practises.

November was also our Annual ACS Audit. MAN Commercial Protection have been proud ACS members for 14 years; each year independent auditors review our business processes to ensure the procedures in place are correct and compliant with the accredited standards. The assessor verifies this by auditing various documentation and speaking with different members of staff to ensure compliance is achieved and full understanding is present.
In line with COVID-19 guidelines, the audit was conducted differently this year and where possible was remote, which meant lots of video calls, advance preparation, secure sending, and greeting each other with a virtual wave!

Despite the new challenges we were faced with this year, we are thrilled to announce we received our highest ever score which puts us in the top 5%!

October News

We kicked off the month in our favourite way, with a birthday celebration at the office! Maria, who is PA to Iain McCallister alongside running our payroll, turned 30 on the 2nd of the month and we had just the theme in mind! With plans of celebrating her milestone birthday in Ibiza off the cards thanks to Covid-19, we brought the party to Solihull and held a white isle-themed mocktail party to mark the occasion.

30th Birthday

We have recently installed a 84 inch interactive smart screen in our Head Office training room, which is a fantastic addition. The screen allows us to access internet apps and hold larger meetings via Zoom or Teams with ease and more effectively.

MAN Commercial win an award

It is great for watching and taking part in online presentations, of which there is a lot at the moment due to government restrictions. It’s good to know we aren’t missing out due to lockdown, and can still take part in things remotely – we recently shared that we were finalists in the recent Solihull Chamber of Commerce Awards #SolihullAwards20 and we were able to join in on the night of the awards remotely. Sadly we weren’t winners this year in our category (Large Business of the Year) but it was an honour to be shortlisted finalists alongside some great local brands.

We have been busy mobilising for two new pop up distribution sites for one of our large clients in this sector, with locations in Birmingham and Cambridgeshire going live in early November.

We have also secured contracts with both existing and new clients, including high profile concierge buildings in London’s Docklands and Chelmsford, and a distribution client in Ipswich. These assignments will start later in the year, but our operations and HR teams are already working on the set up, TUPE and recruitment.

We are also pleased to share that we will be taking on 70 new keyholding sites from December, all managed by our 24 hour Head Office Control Room. Given our central location in Solihull, minutes from the M42, we are ideally placed for key holding and alarm response clients across the Midlands and beyond.

Recruitment is always a huge area of focus for us and we have recently promoted Chloe, previously our Junior Office Administrator, into the role of Recruitment Advisor. We are keen to expand our in-house recruitment team and Chloe has been a much-needed proactive and enthusiastic influence in this area. Well done Chloe!

Once again in October we received a record number of nominations for our employee of the month award, which is a fantastic testament to the excellent job that our teams across the UK are delivering. We also have plans in place to launch a “Special Recognition Award” for those Officers who have truly excelled or completed an outstanding act whilst on duty.

September News

We kicked off September in the best way we know how, with the takeover of a brand new site on the 1st. This is the first COMAH site in our portfolio, and we are working with a brand new client.

The 11th September marked a big birthday for Chris Smith, our Quality Director who turned 50. Chris has been at MAN for over 20 years and we wanted to make the day special for him so we all celebrated with a surprise birthday brunch at Head Office.

We are proud to announce that we have been shortlisted for two very exciting awards this month! We work hard as a team at MAN Commercial across all areas of the business and we think it is important to recognise the good work we do and believe in putting our people forward for the recognition they deserve in the industry.

Our HR Team have been selected as finalists for the ‘Inspiration in HR’ category at the upcoming 2020 Security and Fire Excellence Awards which will take place in November. The HR team are thrilled to have been recognised in this way, particularly for their hard work, dedication and innovation during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

We are also finalists at October’s Solihull Awards in the ‘Large Business of the Year’ category. Solihull has always been the home of MAN Commercial, with our Head Office based in the town ever since we started back in 1993. As significant local employers in the Solihull and Birmingham areas we were excited to put ourselves forward and are delighted to have reached the finals.

You may have spotted one or two MAN Commercial officers on ITV news this month! ITV filmed at one of sites on the 14th September – Sunseeker in Poole where we operate a security team of over 30.

We have also received more nominations this month for our Employee of the Month Award than ever before! Nominations usually come from clients, managers or members of the public who have had a positive experience thanks one of our security officers, received outstanding service or observed an officer going above and beyond their daily duties to really make a difference. To have so many nominations is fantastic, and really shows the impact of what our officers are doing.

All winners of this award are added to the Employee of the month page each month so keep an eye out for updates!

As always, we are focussed on making improvements whereby we keep pushing the Company forwards, this month we have put plans in place for a technology upgrade to our training room equipment. We’ll be having a state of the art 86-inch interactive television installed next month. This addition will really support the business as this will enhance and support virtual meetings now taking place more than ever in line with Covid.

At the beginning of September, we went live with our new Google ads campaign – this campaign has been designed and launched to enhance and encourage web interaction and attraction along with supporting our ever-growing sales team.

We are also always working to recruit and are currently trialling a new job platform as well as investing more in our existing recruitment platforms to really maximise the visibility of our job vacancies and our position as a prominent employer within the security industry.

This month we went live with our new uniform recycling initiative, this has been put in place to help save costs and encourage as a business to be more environmentally friendly. This helps the company reduce uniform expenditure along with contributing towards the environment we are very excited to see the results and figures over the next few months of costs saved along with the figures of uniform recycled.

August News

August can often be a quiet month, thanks to the usual peak holiday season, but the events of 2020 have made sure this wasn’t the case this year – at least not at MAN Commercial!

MAN Commercial Head Office in Solihull

Even without our usual jam-packed Summer festivals and events schedule, we have remained exceptionally busy mobilising sites with new clients, as well as helping existing customers manage their growing security needs due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Although we have been disappointed to miss our usual Summer commitments, especially with MAN Commercial being veterans in the Event Security sector, it has been unfortunate to be forced to take a year’s break. However, our Event Teams have keenly got involved in other areas, providing support on our existing contracts and working on temporary NHS testing centres and projects.

August saw the start of two new permanent contracts; a shopping complex in Stoke-on-Trent and a prestigious business park in Leicestershire. The latter has included the introduction of our first electric vehicle, and a team of 6 new Officers who have joined us by TUPE transfer.
On top of this, we have also heavily increased our security provisions for an existing client in the distribution industry, who have opened several new warehouses recently to support the NHS supply chain.

September will see us commence a new contract with our first ever COMAH site, so recruitment, staff training and in depth health and safety assessments are already underway as we prepare to mobilise.

Recruitment has begun for some exciting new roles in the Birmingham area; Transport Safety Officers who will be based across the West Midlands travel network. Transport Safety Officers have proved successful in Manchester and these positions are a first for Birmingham. This is a project we are working on with West Midlands Combined Authority and West Midlands Police and we are delighted to be involved.

Back at Head Office, we have again been busily recruiting to strengthen our support teams as the business grows. This month Chloe and Jamie joined us to work within our recruitment and vetting teams. MD Iain McCallister has also appointed Maria Randall as PA to Managing Director.

Our new remote sign-in system in our Head Office reception is now live – the ipad based system provides visitors with information required for their visit and gives them the opportunity to leave feedback afterwards. We have also had new drone footage shot around the office, giving an exciting overview of our premises. Along with this, new pictures have been taken to be used for website updates.

MAN chosen as NHS Shared Business Services Provider for the UK

MAN Commercial are absolutely delighted to announce after a lengthy tender process we have been chosen as an NHS Shared Business Services national framework provider for security throughout the UK.

Given our vast experience within the NHS, PCT and security provision from security guarding, keyholding, mobile response and full 24-hour coverage to assist with all challenges.

We look forward to a long and lasting working relationship with NHS Shared Business Services!

July News

August already and what a busy July we have had here at MAN Commercial! With government restrictions easing further in July, this meant we could begin going back out to sites and bringing senior management back to Head Office- following social distancing rules and government guidelines, of course!

This has allowed us to begin working through essential site audits, complete risk assessments and assignment instructions for new sites and conduct mobilisation meetings. We began July with our quarterly management meeting which has been postponed since February! This gave us the opportunity to discuss our current business plan and new mobilisations and site acquisitions throughout the UK. Although the management team have caught up regularly on the phone and via Zoom, the meeting was a much-needed catch up and gave a nice sense of workplace normality in this challenging time.

On the 15th of July we were even able to celebrate our Accounts Assistant Amy’s 21st birthday with a socially distanced BBQ, which also served as a good bye and good luck for HR Assistant Emily as she began her maternity leave.
With our spirits up and pushing forward to the next chapter, July was a good opportunity to Head Office a refresh with outside paintwork and a few general improvements – we have been at Highlands Court now for 11 years!

We shared last month that we had rolled out our first ever Employee Engagement Survey to the whole company, and by July the results were in and we presented these to management and shared them with all staff. The results and feedback received are extremely positive in many areas; we are particularly proud of the fact that over 80% of respondents enjoy their job, feel part of the team and agree that MAN Commercial provide excellent security, with 95% ensuring they deliver the highest possible standards while at work.

July also brought us many more outstanding achievements by our fantastic Officers, see our Employee of the Month page for the full details. One of the Awards went to our Team at EUK5, a team of 33 who have received numerous excellent reports from our client Amazon. With such a large team we wanted to celebrate with something special, so each Officer was given a branded MAN Commercial cupcake as a thank you!

We have three new contracts beginning in August, so mobilisation is well underway. An exciting requirement of one of these is an electric vehicle, a first for our fleet. We have also continued to provide our services at Covid Testing Stations this month, along with starting new distribution centre work, residential security and providing high-profile escorts.

MAN Team at Amazon EUK5 in Peterborough achieve 100% in KPI’s

MAN Commercial’s Security Team at Amazon EUK5 in Peterborough have achieved 100% in all their KPI’s for the month of June 2020, earning themselves outstanding status over the last 4 months.

We are beyond proud of this group of Officers, led by Security Manager Rich Unitt, but these excellent results are actually the latest in a long line of fantastic achievements by this team. Rich said of his team’s results “It is all credit to the teams and their outstanding engagement and efforts.”

MAN Commercial’s Contract Manager for Amazon Dave Keighley added  “The scores include many positive comments, to achieve 100% despite the challenges faced during these times is fantastic.”

One of our core officers, Elton, was last month responsible for preventing thefts worth hundreds of pounds. With search techniques reduced at the moment due to Covid-19 safety precautions, Elton showed an excellent eye for anything untoward by spotting full pockets and a change of posture on the suspect. A few days later, Elton detected another potential thief who was attempting to hide some perfume bottles under his hoodie as he made his way out of the fulfilment centre. Elton was recognised for his Outstanding Contribution to the team’s success and presented with £25 High Street Vouchers alongside his certificate.

The second Officer who was celebrated for her contribution to the achievements of EUK5 is Yvonne. Yvonne spotted an associate with something concealed under his arm, which on challenging him she found to be an apple charger, the discovery of which lead to further electronic goods being located.

Team Supervisor Rashid Khaderzai also received a Special Recognition Award after his quick reaction to a fire outbreak in the cardboard trailer on site. Rashid was praised by Amazon for his fantastic organisation and leadership whilst handling this potentially dangerous situation.

Yvonne, Rashid and Elton received vouchers alongside their certificates, alongside Rich Unitt and the rest of the team who were all awarded with MAN Commercial cupcakes.

HR Director Traci McCallister and People & Communications Director Laura McCarthy visited site this week to present the awards and pass on congratulations and thanks to the team.

June News

From 9th June we had our ACS audit which was done via Zoom over 3 days. This is our 14th consecutive year as an SIA approved contractor and we are delighted to announce that we have increased our score!

We also held socially distanced aviation training at our Head Office and set up our training room in classroom-style.

The BSIA awards 2020 couldn’t go ahead this month due to the COVID-19 pandemic but they held a remote ceremony on their YouTube channel and invited all the nominees to participate. We invited the Meggitt team to join us at Head Office to watch the ceremony and celebrate where they were personally thanked by Iain McCallister MD and had their regional awards officially presented. Please see our full piece on the event by clicking the link

We have also won new contracts in new sectors this month which include chemicals and residential security, and we have increased our portfolio with high value vehicle escorts.

As we start to welcome back staff and visitors to our Head Office, we have now installed sanitising stations at to ensure we keep our staff and visitors protected as best we can. This is just one of the extra precautions we have put in place. We would again like to thank all of our officers again for their continuous support and hard work throughout the pandemic and we hope you are all staying safe and keeping well.
