Meet Hadyn, who started with MAN Commercial in 2023. Haydn started his career with us as a Steward, and was soon accepted on to our Event Career Development Plan which meant he accessed First Aid and SIA Door Supervisor training.  Haydn has also qualified as a CCTV Operator, and worked in busy Control Rooms.

His journey is a testament to the growth and opportunities within our company, highlighted by the training, progression, and various different roles he has undertaken. Here, he shares his story and insights into working for MAN Commercial Protection.

What first interested you in joining MAN Commercial?

I knew about the company, but I never thought I would be part of security as it wasn’t my original interest for work. However, everything deserves a try. So I did, and I’ve loved every minute since.

Q: What have you learned from working at big events like Wembley Stadium

The big events are the best ones to be a part of, as you really see the team come together and work hard to make sure the event is even better for everyone involved. MAN Commercial have also  provided NVQ Level 2 Stewarding training to maximize our knowledge and ensure we are at our best while working at the football games and any Wembley events. I started to gain more confidence in my role the more I worked at different events. I learned how to work in different positions and support all my colleagues, regardless of their stature.

I’ve received a good amount of customer feedback as well, especially from Wembley. One case was during the Capital Summertime Ball in high heat. I didn’t stop handing out and filling up water bottles to make sure everyone in my section was well hydrated. I also offered a positive mindset, ensuring I did my part in helping people have a better experience than they could ever expect.

The Role of a CCTV Operator

Q: What do you enjoy about your role as a CCTV operator?

Working as a CCTV operator has helped me recognize how people respond to certain situations. The training I have received has been a huge part of my development. It has allowed me to gain even more confidence and experience to assist the West Midlands Police and British Transport Police in preventing, stopping, and controlling crime. Career Development and Goals

Q: How have MAN helped you with your career goals?

I never had a job where I was comfortable or felt like I had a future until I joined this company. They allowed me to explore different progression paths by opening doors and suggesting suitable training and resources to improve my knowledge. Even as a steward, I was learning how to be a top security officer through observation of how the licensed team was working and picking up different techniques to help improve customer service and manage conflicts.

Q: How do you see your career progressing?

I can see my career progressing really well. I would like to go to the top and progress into management, but I also understand the implications and challenges that will arise. I believe in myself and the company’s future to be very successful, so I’m envisioning a career full of knowledge and opportunities.

We were delighted to be awarded two titles at the prestigious Solihull awards ceremony held on Friday 13^th September at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, taking home the prizes for:

• Excellence in Training, Education and Development In People
• Solihull Business of the Year

Our entry impressed judges who were interested in our journey to become a big player in a traditionally difficult sector, investing heavily in our people and securing high-profile contracts.

“We are very proud of our Solihull roots, so to be named the best overall company is some achievement – especially when we were competing against some fantastic businesses,” explained Iain McCallister, CEO.

“It’s all about our people, they really are the heart of what we do. Over 1600 people are now employed by us and this success is down to their commitment and passion for keeping people, places and property safe.”

It was a double success on the evening, with us also securing the Training, Education and Development Award in front of over 300 people.

This title was awarded for our work in launching a new state-of-the-art Training Academy at our Shirley offices, which provides SIA Highfield-accredited  security courses for our own teams, other companies and the public directly through sales on the website.

Iain concluded: “When we first started the business 31 years ago, few of us could have imagined how big MAN Commercial Protection would grow.”

“Our client base spans from Aberdeen down to Poole and, with high-profile clients in manufacturing, logistics, facilities management and local authorities to name a few, as well as providing personal security for some of the biggest sports stars and musicians in the world. We hope that these awards will help us grow our profile in the Solihull area, where we are a significant local employer. We are extremely proud of our growth but are always looking to expand even further, through a combination of continued organic growth and exploring the possibility of acquisitions.”

Ten of the team from head office attended the ceremony, which was a brilliant event organised by the chamber.

The British Security Awards, is an annual event which celebrates security excellence and showcases the best in the security industry.

CEO Iain McCallister’s visionary leadership has been instrumental in MAN Commercial Protection Ltd’s growth and success. Iain lives and breathes security; such rich personal experience allows him to be empathetic to the needs of his 1500-strong workforce. He always leads by example and is an inspiration to his Head Office team and officers in the field. The ‘Excellence In Leadership’ award is a testament to Iain’s dedication, strategic foresight, and the huge impact he has had on both the company and the industry as a whole.

Account Director Gill Yardley was honoured with the ‘Service to the Customer’ award, recognising her unwavering commitment to client satisfaction. Since starting with MAN Commercial in 2017, Gill has made an extraordinary impact with her incredible work ethic and passion. She has brought energy, enthusiasm, and extensive operational knowledge to her role, allowing her to seamlessly deliver in both commercial and customer relationship capacities. Over her 8-year tenure, Gill has been a driving-force for customer service excellence.

Judged by carbon specialists Alectro, this award highlights those who have gone above and beyond to deliver sustainable and ethical services. MAN Commercial stood out for our annual ESG reporting, impressive electric fleet transition and sourcing of ethical uniform suppliers.

CEO Iain McCallister, Compliance Manager Lauren Elmes and Quality Director Chris Smith were presented with the Award earlier this month at The Keyholding Company’s London HQ.

The ESG Award is great recognition for our efforts in integrating sustainable practices within our day-today operations.

Paul Wheatley’s role as a Transport Safety Officer is to tackle low level anti-social behaviour and improve the perception of safety for users of the transport network. Paul has made a huge impact since joining the team.

We have employed highly-skilled CCTV Operators for the West Midlands Combined Authority’s busy Birmingham Control Room since 2012.

The Control Room operates round the clock, ensuring the safety and security of the West Midlands region, with over 200 monitors and 2500 cameras spanning four local authorities, busy public spaces such as town centres, bus and rail stations.
Over the past 12 months, the team have been integral in capturing evidence of criminal activities as well as playing a crucial role in protecting vulnerable members of the community.

Our Security Team at Xscape Yorkshire have had a fantastic 12 months. Security at this popular leisure destination in Castleford has been provided by MAN Commercial since 2022, and the team have frequently been recognised for their fantastic responses to a high level of challenging incidents, which include attempted abduction, assaults, anti-social behaviour and medical emergencies.

Account Director Gill Yardley is a champion of customer service and has been in the security industry for over 30 years. Gill’s passion for MAN Commercial and delivering the highest possible standards make her a worthy winner.

Regional winners will go head-to-head to be named national champions at the British Security Awards 2024, which will be held on 3^rd July at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. Good luck to all!

On 30^th April 2024, we were awarded the Family-Owned Business of the Year at the Security and Safety Entrepreneur Awards.

The Security and Safety Entrepreneur Awards took place in collaboration with The Security Event held at the NEC, Birmingham, joined by founding supporters from BSIA, The Banks Foundation and Skills for Security. 

The awards celebrate outstanding contributions and achievements within the security industry and highlight companies that demonstrate exceptional performance, dedication, and leadership.

We are honoured to take home this award as we believe the award serves as a testament to our ongoing commitment to our core values and employee welfare.

MAN Commercial Protection were delighted to host the Midlands Forum on behalf of the BSIA.

The Forum proved to be a very popular event, with over 80 attendees across two days.

Day one was Security Officer Services day, chaired by Tony Cockcroft, BSIA’s SOS Chairman. Attended by representatives from over 20 security guarding providers, the day’s agenda covered a variety of topics. Speakers included Tracey Lilley from the SIA, Patrick Holdaway from City of London Police and Colin Duffy from HMRC.

Although a jam-packed schedule, there was still time for us to include an introduction to MAN and a demo of the courses we offer. Guests were then treated to lunch in the Training Academy.

Day 2 of the Forum was focused on Technical Services, with speakers discussing training, recruitment, AI and cybersecurity. BSIA Chief Commercial Officer Paddy Kyle also hosted an interactive panel discussion.

The MAN Commercial team thoroughly enjoyed hosting the event and the opportunity to network with our industry peers and meet some new contacts. It was a pleasure to work with our friends at the BSIA, who were delighted at the smooth running of the two days.

On January 24th, we were proud to host the first Midlands-based Regional Forum for the British Security Industry Association.

The special interest group was attended by HR and Health & Safety leaders from across the sector, with important topics discussed, including new employee legislation and the latest in industry tech.

We are pleased to announce the award of a new retail, corporate and concierge security guarding contract for MAPP Property Management, from 1st December 2023.

The new contract sees MAN Commercial providing security guarding, keyholding, alarm response and mobile patrols to an additional 15 MAPP-managed locations across Birmingham, Coventry and Nottingham, building on their existing portfolio and further strengthening our presence in the Midlands region.

Commenting on the contract, Iain McCallister, CEO of MAN Commercial Protection, said: “Our new contract with MAPP signifies the expansion of our client portfolio, bringing our total sites to 17.  We are delighted to build on our relationship with MAPP and reinforce our commitment to delivering exceptional security services.”
